KLR Communications is delighted to have successfully assisted our client to obtain funding under the Department of Social Services’ Information, Linkages and Capacity Building Program.

The grant opportunity aims to enable the participation of people with a disability in community life – particularly in arts, culture, sport and recreation activities.

“Our South Australian-based client is heavily involved in the Bhutanese community and doing invaluable work assisting newly arrived individuals and families to integrate into their local community. This funding enables them to expand their programs, offering opportunities for Bhutanese NDIS participants to participate in cultural and language appropriate activities, reducing social isolation and enabling self-expression and development of their English skills”, said KLR Communications’ Managing Director, Kathryn Garth. “They will be addressing the gap in support following refugee support reducing 6 – 7 months after arrival.”

A high percentage of Bhutanese Australians are newly arrived refugees and are challenged by very low rates of English literacy. Over 95% of Bhutanese participants with a disability lack working English skills, limiting their access to mainstream supports, arts, culture, and recreational activities. In addition to this is the stigma and shame associated with disability, even when seeking to access Bhutanese Community activities.

Fortnightly programs will be offered for the next 12 months, with culturally appropriate facilitators, presenters, artists and exhibitors sourced from within the local Bhutanese community, offering paid opportunities to contribute to the community.
